Steinmeier visit to Ukraine not desired
Warsaw - "I was ready for that. But obviously - and I have to admit - that was not what was wanted in Kyiv," said Steinmeier during his visit to Warsaw. Steinmeier wanted to travel to Kyiv together with Polish President Andrej Duda and the heads of state of the Baltic countries "to send and set a strong sign of European solidarity with Ukraine," he said.
The background is said to be Steinmeier's decades of friendly Russia policy. During his time as Foreign Minister, he maintained good relations with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Steinmeier is also considered a supporter of the Nord Stream 2 Baltic Sea pipeline. A week ago, the Federal President admitted that there were errors in his Russia policy.
