Germany: The proportion of people with a migration background continues to grow
A person has a migration background if he or at least one of his parents was not born with German citizenship. The share of around 27 percent corresponds to an increase of two percent of the total number from the previous year.
Half of the people speaks mainly German
While 53 percent of people with a migration background were German nationals themselves, 47 percent had foreign passports. Almost two thirds of the people with a migration background – 62 percent – came from other European countries.
The most important countries of origin were Turkey (12 percent), Poland (10 percent), Russia (6 percent) and Kazakhstan (6 percent). According to the Federal Statistical Office, around half of the people surveyed - 46 percent - said they spoke German exclusively or at least mostly German at home.
The authority obtained this data from the microcensus of 2021. The microcensus is a sample survey in which around one percent of the German population is surveyed on various topics every year. According to the office, it is currently the only official source on the proportion of people with a migration background in Germany.
