Shooting at a fair in Germany: Syrian refugee kills a 40-year-old man

Lüdenscheid (NRW) – Three days after the shots were fired at the fair, the suspected shooter is in custody: the district court in Lüdenscheid issued an arrest warrant for intentional manslaughter against a 16-year-old boy from Syria on Tuesday afternoon.

Investigators assume that the Syrian shot indiscriminately into the crowd on Saturday as he fled with five acquaintances after an argument. A fair visitor (40) from Gummersbach died after being hit in the spleen. According to the current status of the investigation, the Sudanese was an uninvolved accidental victim.

He later died of internal bleeding – it was only found out during the autopsy on Sunday that he had been hit by a bullet.

The argument was preceded by a dispute between the group, who were later described as southerners, and a 16-year-old – for a trivial reason, it was said. When his father later confronted the young people, they fled – and shot.

The arrested person is said to have been carryig a knife while his friend fired a blank pistol. The murder weapon has not yet been found.

The suspect is said to be a student at a comprehensive school who has not yet had a criminal record. His lawyer Günel Celik: "We are currently not making any statements. My client also defended himself in silence before the magistrate."

Shortly after the crime, a witness released a video showing the suspects fleeing through a garden. While the first run, the buddies follow rather leisurely.

As Bild learned from investigators, the recordings are classified as authentic. The video material (are said to be images from surveillance cameras) led to the arrest of the youth.

Meanwhile, the city of Lüdenscheid faces strong criticism because the Steinert fair was not canceled immediately after the crime. Mayor Sebastian Wagemeyer (45, SPD) explained that it was only clear on Sunday afternoon. “Up until then it had all been pure speculation. There was no reliable knowledge, no clear facts. We didn't know if shots had actually been fired and what the victim had died from."

The search for the accomplices is still ongoing.
