German Military Commissioner wants more staff for the fight against the right

The Parliamentary Commissioner for the Armed Forces, Eva Högl (SPD), has called for more personnel to combat right-wing extremism within the Bundeswehr. "There are a lot of cases in the troop service courts," Högl told the Rheinische Post. She was particularly concerned about the length of the proceedings. However, it is crucial that an incident is quickly clarified and sanctioned.

“The sanction fizzles out if the decision is not made until five years later. That is unacceptable," criticized the military commissioner. She assumes that Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht (SPD) wants to come to faster procedures. In addition, more needs to be done for prevention.

A lot has happened on this subject in recent years. There is "a heightened sensitivity throughout the squad," Högl asserted. "The red lines are completely clear, and also that there is no tolerance." According to a report by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, the Bundeswehr's military counter-intelligence service initiated a total of 108 investigations into suspected right-wing extremist attitudes from July 2018 to June 2021, six of them have now been discontinued.
