Germany: Fight against clan crime seems questionable under the CDU and the Greens

In North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), the local Minister of the Interior Herbert Reul (CDU) relies on the "tactic of 1,000 pinpricks". This is intended to fight criminal clans by means of high control pressure and repeated searches.

On Wednesday it was that time again in Duisburg. The police, customs, tax investigators, public prosecutors and highway police checked 363 vehicles and later cafes, restaurants and arcades. However, according to the police, the yield was manageable. 16 criminal charges, including driving without a license, administrative offenses such as children not wearing seat belts and speeding violations. During the raid on the premises, illegal slot machines, people without valid residence permits and illegal alcohol sales were found, among other things. The officials issued corresponding warnings and a cafe was closed.

The police emphasized: “In addition to identifying violations, the security authorities also wanted to uncover information about the structures of criminal clan members and incorporate them into investigations.”

Clan crime is missing from the exploratory paper
For years, Christian Democrat Reul has emphasized that such large-scale actions can keep up the pressure on the Turkish-Arab clans. This fuels insecurity in the milieu and drains illegal sources of money. As late as March, he recorded a day of action against the clans in his state as a success.

In view of this, it is surprising to look at the current coalition negotiations between the CDU and the Greens in North Rhine-Westphalia. Because, according to Welt , there is nothing in the joint exploratory paper by the two parties to combat the criminal clans. Instead, combating child abuse should become the “criminal strategic focus”. In addition, right-wing extremism is “currently the greatest threat to our democracy”.

If you consider how much space the topic of clan crime took up in the CDU election campaign, the suspicion arises that it was just a tactical maneuver. The memory of the shooting on the open street in Duisburg at the beginning of May seems to have faded.
