Lake Garda: riots of young asylum seekers against tourists

Peschiera del Garda in northern Italy. The community of 10,000 attracts tourists with thermal baths and amusement parks. But once a year the idyll is over. 1500 asylum seekers from North Africa meet for a “festival”. On the program: alcohol, violence, and sexual abuse.

Many shops in the region remained closed as a precaution. They prepared for a storm. And it wasn't long in coming: the platforms in Peschiera were crowded with hundreds of young North African males. Their goal: a dance and music festival on the beach. Their motto: "Africa in Peschiera del Garda". The phenomenon is not new. Mayor Orietta Gaiulli reports a recurring event: "The first year there were 200, the year after 500 and now 2000."

"White women don't get in here"
It wasn't just a dance event this year either. The first big brawl was only a short time in coming. Knives were also used.

Tichys Einblick also reports: Six girls between the ages of 16 and 17 who had spent the day at Gardaland amusement park and were on their way back to Milan were molested by young North Africans on the train. The young women searched desperately for a conductor in the overcrowded train. "We were surrounded. They laughed and said, 'White women don't get in here,'" says one of the girls. Some of the girls passed out.

"No Tolerance"
Luca Zaia is President of the Veneto Region. He appeals: "It is unacceptable for girls in our region to be harassed or attacked. I appeal to the police to show no tolerance and to do everything possible to find those responsible.”
