Multiculturalism in Dortmund: Three girls harassed for bringing the Pride Flag to school

Dortmund – The scandalous student uprising against a rainbow flag probably has no significant consequences for those involved.

More than 100 boys and girls from the 5th and 6th year of the Robert Koch secondary school in Dortmund had booed, pursued and harassed three girls - apparently because the trio wanted to draw attention to the "Pride Month" for diversity with the LGBT flag.

"The issue is not suitable for tough sanctions," said a spokesman for the district government. However, the school will consistently work up the incident and continue to ensure that different gender and sexual identities are treated with respect, it said.

Headmaster Wolfgang Siebeck: "In a multicultural school like the Robert-Koch-Realschule, friendships are not based on skin color, but on sympathy, common interests or hobbies."

According to Bild information, teachers also watched without intervening or standing in front of the girls to protect them. When the rector confronted them about it, they are said to have spoken of being overwhelmed with the unpredictable reaction.

"The incident has also caused great dismay among the entire teaching staff," the spokesman continued. The harassed students are looked after by class teachers, school management and social workers.

However, internal measures may not stop there – the police have also become involved. "The colleagues in the criminal investigation department are now checking the video material for criminally relevant behavior," said a spokesman on Thursday.

First, blogger "Wikiriot" (28) reported on the incident, causing outrage across the country. She sees a “queer hostility in society” reflected in the school rush.

Discrimination can be prevented with a simple basic rule. The activist to Bild: "Take care of each other, be understanding if you don't understand something."
