Germany: increase in CO2 tax can cost hundreds of euros per residential unit

The planned increase in the CO2 tax from 30 euros to 55 euros per tonne in 2023 and 2025 will mean an additional burden of up to 200 euros on tenants, landlords and owners.

Berlin - This is reported by Bild (Monday edition), citing calculations by the Haus&Grund Owners' Association. After that, the burden for tenants in a well-insulated two-room apartment (60 square meters) increases by around 20 euros. For the year 2025, owners must expect additional costs of around 25 euros (well insulated) to around 140 euros (poorly insulated) compared to today.

For a well-insulated single-family house (160 square meters), the costs for the CO2 tax in a well-insulated building increase from the current 77 euros to 90 euros (2023) and 141 euros (2025). In a poorly insulated house, the burden increases to around 291 euros (2023) and 458 euros (2025) per year. The President of Haus&Grund, Kai Warnecke, said to Bild: "The CO2 tax must be abolished."

It was introduced to encourage consumers to save energy. But that's exactly what the "exploding energy prices" have already done. "That's why we don't need any additional burden," said Warnecke to Bild.
