Germany: Islamist terrorism dominates the work of the federal prosecutor

From January 1, 2020 to July 1 of this year, the terrorism department of the Attorney General has initiated 757 investigations into Islamist terrorism.

Berlin - This is reported by the Welt am Sonntag. In the area of right-wing terrorism, 26 new procedures have been initiated since then, and 17 in the area of left-wing terrorism. Within these three phenomena, the cases of Islamist terrorism make up almost 95 percent.

Since the beginning of this year, the Terrorism Department has initiated a total of 215 new investigations, 127 of which relate to Islamist terrorism, nine to right-wing terrorism and none to left-wing terrorism. The remaining procedures fall into other phenomena areas. Of the total number of terrorist investigations initiated since 2020, 64 percent relate to Islamist terrorism, around two percent to right-wing terrorism and almost one and a half percent to left-wing terrorism.

Attorney General Peter Frank told the Sunday newspaper: "Terrorism motivated by Islamism not only dominates our work in terms of numbers. Various proceedings also show that the danger from Islamist attacks in Germany persists." Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) said: "The threat from Islamist terrorism remains high. Terrorist organizations, jihadist groups or individuals - above all the self-proclaimed Islamic State - continue to pursue the goal of committing terrorist attacks. " The Union faction in the Bundestag takes the figures from the Federal Prosecutor's Office as an opportunity to question the priorities of the traffic light coalition. "

"So far we haven't heard anything from Ms. Faeser about the fight against Islamism." This accusation is rejected by the coalition factions. "The danger posed by Islamist terrorism must not be underestimated," said the vice-chairman of the FDP parliamentary group, Konstantin Kuhle. However, internal security in Germany would not be helped if different forms of extremism were offset against each other. "When the federal government makes the fight against right-wing extremism its priority, this does not mean that Islamism is neglected." Green leader Omid Nouripour warned: "The jihadist threat was never gone. But it threatens to come back with force." This is due to the resurgence of the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq, but can also be seen in the increase in recruitment attempts in Europe. "Violent Islamism remains a deadly danger for all of us," Nouripour told the Welt am Sonntag.
