New migrants expected: Lampedusa evacuated

Lampedusa - The Italian authorities began evacuating the Lampedusa refugee camp on Sunday. First, a naval ship brought 600 migrants from the island between Tunisia and southern Italy to Porto Empedocle in Sicily. The ship then turned around to pick up and take away another 600 people.

The reception center has capacity for around 350 people, at the end of last week a good 1,800 people were counted. Because the government in Rome is expecting many new migrants from North Africa next week, the camp should be emptied and cleaned as soon as possible. The Italian prefecture, which also includes Lampedusa, announced that all immigrants should be distributed to other camps in Italy by Tuesday at the latest, according to the Ansa news agency.

The Ministry of the Interior in Rome has already registered more than 30,000 illegal immigrants arriving on Italian coasts, including Lampedusa, this year.
