The Central Committee of German Catholics calls for more abortion capacity

Berlin - The Central Committee of German Catholics (ZdK) has called for abortion capacities to be expanded in Germany. It is "to be ensured that the medical intervention of an abortion is made possible across the board," demanded ZdK President Irme Stetter-Karp in the current supplement Christ und Welt.

This is currently not the case, "because gynecological care is lacking, especially in rural areas - regardless of their denominational character," warned Stetter-Karp. Now there is a "reflection" on how the offer can be secured. At the same time, the ZdK boss emphasized that abortions are not a "regular medical service".

Praise for abortion advertising
The Catholic Union also commended the abolition of Pargraph 219a, which until recently banned public advertising for abortions. It is good that the "legal uncertainties" for doctors have been eliminated and that women now have more information opportunities.

Stetter-Karp warned, however, that the "substance" of Article 218 of the Criminal Code, as the Greens are already demanding, should not be violated. This stipulates that while abortions are generally punishable, they will not be prosecuted if there are medical reasons, if the woman was the victim of rape or if she sought advice from a state-approved body before terminating the pregnancy.
