Illegal immigration in the UK: Almost 1,300 migrants cross the English Channel

London - Nearly 1,300 African migrants crossed the English Channel from France to Britain on Monday. This is the highest number within 24 hours since records began in 2018, the country's defense ministry said on Tuesday.

Most recently, there was a new record in November 2021 with 1,185 arrivals in one day. On Monday there were now 1,295 illegal immigrants registered by the authorities.

Number of migrants almost doubled
In total, more than 22,600 migrants have crossed the Channel route to the UK this year. The number has almost doubled compared to the same period last year. Over the past year, 28,526 immigrants have arrived by boat on Britain's shores.

The issue keeps causing trouble between Great Britain and France. The government in London accuses Paris of doing too little to prevent migrants from crossing. France rejected British offers for joint border patrols between the two countries.
