Multicultural enrichment in Berlin: The number of knife attacks has risen massively

Shock numbers from Berlin: In the capital, knife crime has increased by almost a third compared to 2020. More than half of the suspects are foreigners.

In 2022, the Berlin police registered a total of 3,317 cases of knife attacks. A year earlier there were 2,777 cases, as the Berlin House of Representatives answered a question from the Berlin AfD politician Marc Vallendar.

This is an increase of 19.4 percent. In 2020, there were fewer than 2,600 cases of knife attacks.

Even before the Covid pandemic, the numbers were below 3,000. However, a direct comparison is difficult because the recording of such crimes has changed, the dpa news agency reported.

Suspects in knife crimes are often still young
1,194 of the alleged perpetrators had German passports, 1,234 perpetrators had foreign ones. Of the German suspects, 188 had at least one other nationality. Overall, 58.5 percent of the suspects came from another country or had multiple nationalities.

According to the police, knives were mainly found among young men. Police chief Barbara Slowik only complained at the turn of the year that even young people and children were increasingly carrying knives and using them. “Unfortunately, that has increased. We are looking at this development very closely,” said Slowik at the end of last year. The attacks would often happen among groups. "They go out together, meet other groups and then there are arguments, and also with the use of knives."

Since 2020, the Berlin police have also registered an increase in gang rapes . In the approximately 300 cases, 94 of the 299 victims were minors, as the Berlin Senate replied to an AfD request. In 2018 there were only 38 rapes in Berlin involving more than one perpetrator. More than half of the 302 suspects did not have German citizenship.
