Germany: Migrants rape 15-year-old girl and almost all of them get away with probation

In 2020, a gang of migrants attacked a defenseless 15-year-old student in a city park. She is repeatedly raped, filmed and robbed. Now the Hamburg district court is hailing suspended sentences – with one exception.

Hamburg - The youth chamber of the Hamburg regional court decided on Tuesday that eight out of nine convicted gang rapists can remain at large. They had repeatedly raped, severely mistreated and robbed a drunk and defenseless student in a Hamburg city park and made videos of the crime. The defendants, aged between 19 and 23, received suspended sentences of one to two years; a 19-year-old Iranian was sentenced to two years and nine months in juvenile detention.

According to media reports, eight of the nine rapists have a migrant background. They come from, among others, Poland, Egypt, Libya, Kuwait, Iran, Armenia and Afghanistan. According to the court, the men dragged the 15-year-old, heavily drunk and defenseless girl into a bush in the city park in September 2020. First, four people raped her, one of whom stole her cell phone and wallet. Two others then sexually abused the student. Afterwards the other three abused her. Traces of semen from all of them were found on the victim.

Perpetrators show no remorse
Witnesses reported two videos documenting the crimes, which were deleted immediately after the crime. Neither the police nor the court could therefore use the recordings as evidence. According to Bild newspaper, none of the defendants showed any remorse during the trial. One is said to have almost fallen asleep during the verdict.

According to the paper, the migrants' lawyers argued that the young men were simply under testosterone. The presiding judge Anne Meier-Goering said: “We have the right to ensure that young men who are under testosterone also adhere to the law.”

The process had already begun in May 2022. After 68 days of negotiations and hearing from 96 witnesses and several experts, Meier-Goering handed down the verdict on Tuesday. It is not yet legally binding.
