Cologne/Berlin - The security authorities have thwarted a planned Islamist terrorist attack. Two underage Islamists are said to have intended to attack a Christmas market or a synagogue in Cologne next Friday, reports the Bild newspaper. The suspects wanted to carry out the attack with incendiary devices or a small truck.

Both were arrested on Tuesday. The 15-year-old suspect with an Afghan migration background, Edris D., called for jihad against the West in a video on Telegram. He is said to have not been known to the police or the Office for the Protection of the Constitution.

Russian already in the sights of the authorities
His accomplice, the 16-year-old Russian Rasul M. from Wittstock in Brandenburg. He is known to the authorities as a sympathizer of the Islamic State. In Brandenburg he is considered a “relevant person”, suspected of terrorism.

Investigators searched the two migrants' rooms on Tuesday. The Düsseldorf Public Prosecutor's Office and the Neuruppin Public Prosecutor's Office are investigating suspicions of planning to commit a terrorist offense. An arrest warrant was issued against both suspects.

The Office for the Protection of the Constitution warns of Islamist terrorist attacks
Meanwhile, the President of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Thomas Haldenwang, has warned of Islamist terrorist attacks . “The danger is real and higher than it has been for a long time,” he said on Wednesday. The authority is observing increasing calls for attacks from the jihadist spectrum. “We have been observing the declared desire of Islamists to carry out attacks in the West for some time. An Islamist attack can be carried out in Germany every day,” warned Haldenwang.

The danger comes particularly from “emotionalized people inspired by trigger events”. The perpetrators often act alone and attack so-called “soft targets” with simple weapons. The Federal Office is working with other security authorities to develop possible scenarios. “We are working flat out to thwart potential plans against the safety of Jews, Israeli institutions, but also major events,” assured the head of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution.
