Germany: Left-wing politician justifies theft by migrants: “Get back what you are entitled to”

Asylum seekers clear out an Edeka store in Regensburg in an organized manner. A left-wing politician from Berlin celebrates this and approves of the theft: the criminals would only take back “what they are entitled to”.

The operator of an Edeka market in Regensburg made an angry post on Facebook. In it he complains about systematic thefts by asylum seekers from North Africa and speaks of “organized crime”. Asylum seekers from the nearby reception center would always walk into his shop, fill their pockets and leave. Chocolate, vodka and high-priced gourmet goods are among the stolen goods. For example, an asylum seeker who was caught stole goods worth around 140 euros.

The story from Regensburg made the rounds nationwide and even made it into the picture. This also made the left-wing politician Ferat Koçak aware of it. Koçak sits for the Left in the Berlin House of Representatives, where, among other things, he is the parliamentary group spokesman for refugee policy. He now celebrates the mass thefts.

Because: The supermarket chain Edeka emerged from a merger of grocery retailers; the name comes from an acronym for “Purchasing Cooperative of Colonial Grocers.” According to left-wing politician Koçak, it is this circumstance that allows asylum seekers to commit gang theft. “I would say that people are taking back what is rightfully theirs,” he writes. In his post he further explains that asylum seekers are essentially being forced to steal because “the authorities are overloaded and many refugees are not even paid what they need to live.” A theory without evidence.

Edeka once traded in goods from all over the world, including from colonies - nothing about that entitles a man from the Maghreb to steal over 100 years later. The left-wing politician did not respond to outraged user messages. But the letters and suggestions in the comments section are creative: one user asks whether East Germans would then also be allowed to clear out the property of his party, the renamed SED. “I hope all the people who lived in the East during the GDR era will help you and your party comrades. After all, you stole money from these people.”
