Germany: Number of crime victims increased significantly

The victim support organization Weißer Ring recorded significantly more inquiries from crime victims in 2023.

Mainz - The association's approximately 400 branch offices processed almost eleven percent more new cases than in the previous year, the number rose to 20,415, as Spiegel reports. Compared to 2018, in which the White Ring recorded 17,173 new cases, the number actually rose by almost 19 percent. So-called repeat cases, in which the association's employees sometimes look after crime victims for years, were not included. Online and telephone consultations are also not included.

If you were to add these up, you would get 43,279 new victim cases for 2023 (2022: 40,379). The association does not see a significant increase in individual types of crime. Around three quarters of those affected are women; The crimes recorded in 2023 were mostly physical injury including domestic violence (36.9 percent), sexual offenses (27.2 percent) and stalking (8.1 percent). According to its own statements, the White Ring does not record the nationalities of perpetrators.

The association, co-founded by Eduard Zimmermann in 1976, has around 2,700 volunteer victim helpers nationwide.
