Duke students walk out of Jerry Seinfeld graduation speech in Gaza protest

Several students exited Duke University's commencement ceremony on Sunday, some chanting "free Palestine" in protest of comedian Jerry Seinfeld, who, despite his support for Israel during the Gaza conflict, was invited as a guest speaker.

In a video posted on X and verified by Reuters, individuals dressed in graduation robes and caps, some carrying Palestinian flags, were observed leaving the crowd of graduates gathered on the grass in the university's football stadium. Additionally, footage showed attendees departing from the viewing stands, with one person sporting a keffiyeh, a symbol of solidarity with the Palestinian cause.

Despite some disruptions, including shouts of "Jerry! Jerry!" as Seinfeld received an honorary degree, the actor managed to deliver his speech without significant interruption. Addressing the controversy, he remarked, "A lot of you are thinking, ‘I can’t believe they invited this guy.’ Too late," before emphasizing the concept of privilege and urging individuals to utilize it.

Duke spokesperson Frank Tramble stated, “We understand the depth of feeling in our community, and as we have all year, we respect the right of everyone at Duke to express their views peacefully, without preventing graduates and their families from celebrating their achievement.”

Seinfeld's vocal support for Israel dates back to October 7, following Hamas' actions, which resulted in numerous casualties and abductions, according to Israeli reports. In contrast, Palestinian health officials report a significant death toll resulting from Israeli military operations.

The White House, represented by President Joe Biden, expressed support for peaceful protests during college commencement ceremonies, including those attended by administration officials.

The walkout at Duke's graduation is part of a broader wave of protests on US campuses, advocating for divestment from companies profiting from conflicts and amnesty for those facing disciplinary action for protesting. Similar demonstrations have occurred at Emerson College, prompting chants and signs in support of Palestine.

In response to the unrest, some universities, such as Columbia and the University of Southern California, have canceled or modified their commencement ceremonies.
