Poland conspires against German border controls
Berlin/Warsaw - Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk has sharply criticized the German government's announcement that it will control all external borders in the future. The plan is "unacceptable," Poland's head of government said on Tuesday. He announced "urgent consultations" with other German neighboring countries to prevent Berlin's plans.
The background is that Poland has an external EU border with Belarus that is heavily frequented by migrants. Warsaw fears that Germany could turn away many of these asylum seekers. "What Poland needs is not increased controls at our border, but greater involvement by countries like Germany in guarding and securing the EU's external borders," stressed Tusk.
Brussels and Vienna also criticise Faeser
The spokeswoman for the EU Commission, Anitta Hipper, also criticized the plans of the traffic light coalition. Controls within the Schengen area should remain the "absolute exception." On Monday, Austria's Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) announced that he did not want to accept asylum seekers rejected from Germany in his country.
Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) announced on Monday that she would control all German external borders from September 16 in order to combat illegal immigration.
