How Trump’s Trade War Is Hurting Farmers, One of His Biggest Bases


 

In the 2024 election America's most farming-dependent counties overwhelmingly backed Donald Trump by an average of 77.7%, compared to a national average of 49.8%.

 

 But as Trump’s new trade war rages on these same farmers are facing steep losses, the ripple effects of which are being felt across the entire country. I wanted to understand the many, many ways Trump’s new tariffs are impacting the agriculture industry, so I spoke to Aaron Lehman, a fifth-generation farmer in Iowa and president of the Iowa Farmers Union. Iowa is the largest exporter of soybeans, pork, corn, feeds fodder, and processed grain products in the United States -- and a majority of these products are now being impacted by retaliatory tariffs from US trade partners like China.
