The end of democracy: Merkel is not happy and demands for new elections in Thuringia

Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) is not happy with the election of the FDP politician Thomas Kemmerich as Thuringian Minister President with AfD votes, which she considers "unforgivable".

The result of this process must be reversed, Merkel said on a visit to South Africa on Thursday and was indirectly behind demands for new elections until she obtains the results she wants.

The choice was a "unique process" that "broke with a basic belief". The CDU said that it should not participate in a government under the elected minister president.

Merkel spoke of a "bad day for democracy" on which the values and beliefs of the CDU had been broken, and her conclusion was that "now everything must be done so that it becomes clear that this can in no way be reconciled with what the CDU thinks and does."
