EU for government participation against takeovers from China

The European Union sees the need for government participation in companies to avert takeovers by China. According to a report by the Financial Times (FT), EU Commissioner for Competition Margrethe Vestager is asking member countries to buy shares in companies to counter the threat of Chinese takeovers.

"We do not see any problems with states that may emerge as market participants if they acquire shares in a company with the intention of preventing such an acquisition," Vestager said in an FT interview. There is a real risk that companies struck by the coronavirus crisis could become the subject of a takeover.
