European counter-terrorism officials warn against ISIS targeting medical facilities
Anti-terrorism officials in the EU have warned that the Islamic State is looking to use the Wuhan coronavirus crisis to carry out more terrorist attacks.
Counter-terrorism coordinator Gilles de Kerchove warned in a secret
briefing to EU member states that ISIS terrorists may be looking to
attack medical facilities and personnel because they would “generate a
massive shock to society”, Fox News reports.
The counter-terrorism expert added that that violent terrorists and
extremist who’re looking change societies and governmental systems
through violence often seek to exploit major crises to achieve their
goals.
Gilles de Kerchove also noted that terrorists are exploiting the insecurity, vulnerability, and injustice that people may be exposed to in order to obtain more support. He also warned that ISIS had incited its supporters in the West to take advantage of the current crisis to launch attacks.
