"Shut up, slut, and look down" - France outraged by attack on student

In Strasbourg, a young student was insulted and beaten in broad daylight. The government strongly condemned the incident and sent representatives to Strasbourg.

The alleged sexist attack on a student caused outrage in France. The 22-year-old student Elisabeth was said to have been insulted and then beaten by three men during the day near Strasbourg city center, at the Rivétoile shopping center, last Friday because she was wearing a skirt.

On the way home, the men initially said “Look at the whore in the skirt” in passing, whereupon Elisabeth hurled an “Excuse me?” at them.

The situation then escalated. In response, one of the men said to her first: "Shut up, slut, look down and be quiet." Then she was held by two of the men and punched her in the face before they fled leaving the student at France Bleu with a black eye.

She also made allegations against witnesses to the attack. Around 15 people saw it but did nothing, not even testify, said the 22-year-old. "No reaction, as if nothing had happened."

"You are not men!"
In her video, she called on witnesses to come forward to catch the perpetrators before doing the same to other women. “I don't understand how you can go home in the evening knowing that you have insulted and hit a woman like this and then be proud of yourself. Doing this to a woman is not masculine. You are not men!” The student continued.

The government strongly condemns the incident in Strasbourg, Alsace, said spokesman Gabriel Attal on Wednesday. Everyone in France must be able to go out on the street in the clothes they want to wear. Women should not feel at risk, harassed, threatened or attacked because of the choice of their clothes, stressed Attal.

According to media reports, the police opened an investigation into the case. Accordingly, the student also reports. The Assistant Minister in the Ministry of the Interior and ex-State Secretary for Equality, Marlène Schiappa, traveled to Strasbourg on Wednesday to meet with representatives of the police and the prefecture to discuss better protection for women. "The skirt is not responsible for the attack and the woman even less," said Schiappa France Bleu. "Rather, misogynous, sexist, violent people are acting here who disregard every law and every rule of conduct."

In Strasbourg, the Ministry of the Interior will employ a social worker in the police station by 2021, said Schiappa according to a report in the local newspaper "DNA". The aim is to improve the dialogue between victims of gender-based and sexual violence and the police.
