Merkel on mass immigration: "We did it"
Not everything went “ideally”, said Merkel with a view to the events of New Year's Eve 2015 in Cologne. But many “mayors” and “voluntary helpers” helped.
No uniform asylum system in Europe
During the night at the turn of 2015 to 2016, there had been numerous sexual assaults in Cologne. At that time, mainly refugees from the Arab and African regions were responsible. However, Merkel did not address other negative events in connection with the wave of asylum such as terrorist attacks, mass rape and rising crime.
On the contrary: Merkel was overall positive when it came to dealing with the refugee crisis. “We have wonderful examples of successful human developments when I think of high school graduates.” But what has not yet been achieved is to effectively combat the causes of flight. And: "We have not managed to ensure that Europe has a uniform asylum and migration system." There is still a lot to be done here.
