Germany: Defense minister wants more women in the Bundeswehr

Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht (SPD) wants to make the Bundeswehr more attractive for women and more women soldiers in the rank of general.

Berlin - "We have to focus even more on women," she told Bild am Sonntag. It's wrong that while women "reach a glass ceiling in their careers" men negotiate the best positions with each other. "Hopefully" there will be a first Female General outside of the medical service during her term of office.

"I make it my business to ensure that all the women who have already made it up to the Colonel can move up. Nowhere do I see that great people are being thwarted," said Lambrecht. The new Defense Minister wants to hold on to Inspector General Eberhard Zorn for the time being: "In the last few days I have seen a committed Inspector General who is very supportive. I assume that this will remain a good cooperation."
