Germany: Minister of State for Culture Claudia Roth calls for more diversity

Berlin - Minister of State for Culture Claudia Roth (Greens) has spoken out in favor of promoting diversity in German culture more than before. “For me, culture is characterized by diversity. This is also explicitly stated in the coalition agreement. But please don't come with a leading culture, whatever that may be,” explained Roth on Friday in an interview with the Augsburger Allgemeine.

That is why she wants to appoint more minorities to committees in cultural institutions in the future. But it is also important to her to end the poor pay women receive in the cultural sector. In addition, she called for the promotion of culture to be anchored in the Basic Law. "The national goal should be more than a symbol," emphasized Roth. Recognition as a national goal should once again clearly emphasize the extraordinary importance of culture for society and democracy.

In their coalition agreement, the FDP, the Greens and the SPD agreed to anchor culture as a state goal in the Basic Law. “We want to anchor culture in its diversity as a national goal and advocate freedom from barriers, diversity, gender equality and sustainability.” Culture should be promoted in all of its “diversity and freedom”.
