Protest researcher calls for crackdown on corona demos in Germany

Leipzig - The cultural sociologist Alexander Leistner has called for stricter action against unauthorized demonstrations against the corona measures. "The continued allowing the protests by the police has sent dangerous signals," said Leistner, who teaches at the Institute for Cultural Studies, on Monday, according to the Protestant press service.

As a result, "temporarily state-tolerated spaces of their own right were created, which combine with the self-confidence not to allow themselves to be governed by anyone." The state must be able to enforce the monopoly of force and regulations on the street. Otherwise a feeling of political instability threatens to spread.

Kretschmer and Scholz announce a tougher pace
The Saxon Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (CDU) also spoke out in favor of stricter police action to enforce the corona measures. The protest march in front of the home of Saxony's Minister of Social Affairs, Petra Köpping (SPD), on Friday evening represented a border crossing. He assured his cabinet colleague "one hundred percent solidarity".

The designated Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) joined the promise of the Saxon Prime Minister. “As a country, we mustn't put up with that,” affirmed Scholz on Monday, according to the Evangelical Press Service. It is the "business" of Democrats to condemn acts like the rally in front of the house of his party colleague.

On Friday evening around 30 people had gathered for a demonstration in front of the residence of the Saxon Minister of Social Affairs. They chanted slogans like “Peace, Freedom, No Dictatorship” and trilled with their whistles before they were dispersed by the police.
