Merz prepares Germans for a loss of prosperity

Berlin - The CDU leader and opposition leader in the German Bundestag, Friedrich Merz, sees German prosperity on the wane. "We have probably - at least for a certain time - the peak of our prosperity behind us," he said on the ARD television program "Report from Berlin". "It's getting harder."

Politicians can only mitigate this development to a limited extent, warned Merz. “We will no longer be able to afford one or the other. That will be the case for a certain amount of time.” Certain population groups, such as families with many children, need targeted help. "But it will be more expensive for the normal family, including many in the country."

Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) has prepared the Germans for difficult times. He blamed the war in Ukraine, in which Germany was an "economic war party". "It will make us poorer. Society will have to bear it," he said in ZDF's "Heute-Journal".
