Sweden wants to join NATO

Sweden wants to apply for NATO membership as early as this summer.

Stockholm - Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson has made a corresponding decision, reports the daily newspaper Svenska Dagbladet. Accession to the defense alliance could therefore take place as early as June. The application could be made at the NATO summit in Madrid.

A NATO accession of Sweden and Finland was long considered impossible. Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, however, the mood in both countries had changed. Finland's NATO bid, like Sweden's, is expected in June.
