France: Grenoble allows burkinis in swimming pools

Grenoble - The city council in Grenoble, France, has largely lifted dress codes in public swimming pools. The AFP news agency reported that wearing burkinis should also be permitted in the future.

Until now, swimwear in public swimming pools in the city was only allowed to cover the areas from the neck to the knee. This banned the wearing of the Islamic full-body veil.

In order to avoid ambiguity, the term "swimsuit" will be replaced by "swimwear" in the future regulation, which is to apply from June 1st. Women will also be allowed to swim topless in the future.

Critics sense a concession to Islam
Critics object to the new regulation as a further concession to Islam by France, which is actually secular. Proponents, on the other hand, see a liberalization of the public.

Mayor Eric Piolle (Greens) had brought in the proposal. The vote followed a dispute over dress codes at the city's swimming pools, which sparked debate across the country.

President of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region wants to cut Grenoble funds
It is still unclear whether the new regulation will actually be implemented. The prefect of the Isère department, Laurent Prevost, announced that he would take legal action against the regulation before the administrative court in Grenoble, on instructions from the French Ministry of the Interior.

The president of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, to which Grenoble belongs, Laurent Wauquiez (Republican), had previously threatened to freeze funds if the city council overturned the previous rule and allowed the wearing of burkinis. “I warn the mayor: in this case, the region will stop all subsidies to the city of Grenoble. Not a cent of the people of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes will finance submission to Islamism,” he affirmed.
