Germany: Kretschmann demands more immigration and longer working hours

Baden-Württemberg's Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann (Greens) has spoken out in favor of more immigration.

Stuttgart - "We have to specifically recruit specialists from abroad," he told the Mannheimer Morgen. That's why Baden-Wuerttemberg launched the "The Länd" campaign. "It's great and extremely popular," said Kretschmann, praising the image campaign that the opposition rejected because of its high cost.

Kretschmann criticized the fact that Germany has the lowest annual working hours in Europe. "One possibility is that we have to work more," he said. "We are in tough international competition, we have a shortage of skilled workers and at the same time material prosperity will decrease. That's why I don't think the solution is simply to work less," said Kretschmann and added: "We have to get back to more robust things in life." The head of government indirectly defended his controversial Interior Minister Thomas Strobl (CDU) against the attacks by the opposition.

"The opposition is blowing it up," said Kretschmann, without going into the allegations against the deputy prime minister. Kretschmann defended his rejection of a merger of the university hospitals in Mannheim and Heidelberg, only a combined solution is currently planned. "Even the best idea must be fundable," said the head of government.
