Cancel culture: "Sexist!" First German city bans number 1 hit "Layla"
Critics see the hit, which has been number 1 in the German single charts for three weeks, as sexist. That's why it shouldn't be played anymore, they say in Würzburg. The song says: "I have a whorehouse and my mother's name is Layla. She's prettier, younger, hornier." Apparently, the moral guards also bump into the line: "The beautiful Layla, the horny Layla. That bitch Layla, our Layla."
"People used to sing 'Scandal in the restricted area'"
The performers are "DJ Robin & Schürze". The singer did not understand the excitement about the subject of prostitution: "People used to sing 'Scandal in the Restricted Area' or 'We're going to the Whorehouse to Barcelona'." And he wonders why violent texts by gangster rappers aren't in the criticism: "Everyone can have their opinion, but in every German rap song the lyrics are worse. Nobody gets upset about that.”
Musicologist Markus Henrik sees things differently: "The song is calculated to be highly sexist." He suspects that the title is a "weird, subconscious answer to the MeToo debates of recent years", loosely based on the motto: "Here it is now. In short, everything doesn't matter.” Hesse's Juso boss Sophie Frühwald is also among the outraged. She accused the Junge Union (JU) of "exposing sheer sexism on stage" because they played the number 1 hit at their state parliament at the end of June.
