Erdoğan threatens Greece with military action

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has escalated his rhetoric towards Greece, threatening to "suddenly attack Greece one night".

Turkey claims Greece is violating international agreements by militarizing islands in the Aegean.

Turkey has accused Greece of using Russian-made S-300 missile systems to target Turkish jets in Crete in August. Ankara also claims that Greek F-16 planes detected Turkish jets on radar over the eastern Mediterranean. Turkey has lodged a complaint with NATO. Athens has also accused Turkey of violating its airspace.

Although both are NATO members, Turkey and Greece have had decades-long disputes over a range of issues, including territorial claims in the Aegean Sea and disagreements over airspace there. This friction has brought the two countries to the brink of war three times in the last fifty years.

Erdogan has previously used this phrase to hint at upcoming military operations in Syria and Iraq against Kurdish fighters, which Turkey sees as an existential threat.
