Freiburg: Serious riots with knife attacks in asylum accommodation

Freiburg does not come to rest. Because of several serious riots in an asylum accommodation, the police have to use patrol cars from all over the area and the federal police.

Freiburg - In a so-called Freiburg state initial reception facility, there have been several serious riots with numerous injuries. On Sunday and Monday alone, security forces had to move out to five major operations in the asylum seeker accommodation, the police said. They had to pull together patrol car crews from the entire Freiburg city area, neighboring districts and the Federal Police to get the situation under control.

At around 7 p.m. on Sunday, around 40 foreigners attacked each other with knives, sticks and other objects. Officers then took three people into custody. Three and a half hours later, the police encountered 300 foreigners in another altercation. Most were probably onlookers. Mass brawls broke out again, in which the asylum seekers again used knives.

According to the police, "a third riot" broke out around midnight. Again, about 40 people were "some armed with different objects and attacked each other". According to the police, the clashing groups are North Africans on the one hand and Afghans and Syrians on the other.

Asylum workers complain about "threats"
A day later, residents destroyed fire alarms, triggering a major fire brigade operation in the morning. When the rescue workers and later the police officers arrived, they behaved "highly aggressively and carried knives," according to the police. When they were provisionally arrested, they put up considerable resistance.

A few hours later, staff at the facility called the police again after being threatened by several North African residents. A total of eight people were injured over the two days. According to the police, their officers were not injured in the repeated riots. In all cases it was necessary "to act with strong police forces to deal with the situation".

The riots come at a time when the city, which is governed by the Greens, is struggling with massive crime from North Africans. Within a very short time, more than 30 migrants were arrested. The number of shoplifting and pickpocketing as well as acts of resistance has skyrocketed in Freiburg.
