Jarasch: From 2030, only electric cars will be driving through Berlin's city center

Petrol out of Berlin! That is the vision of Berlin's environment senator Jarasch. In doing so, she is backing a policy that is making the capital unattractive for motorists. Because not enough apartments can be built, she holds landlords responsible.

Berlin's Senator for the Environment, Bettina Jarasch (Greens), has big plans for the capital's transport policy. According to her will, by 2030 at the latest, only electric cars should be driving in the city center, she said on Monday to the RBB. "The best thing we can do is say that now, so people know before they buy their next car."

So Jarasch sticks to her plans to make Berlin as unattractive as possible for drivers . A few days ago, Friedrichstraße was again closed to traffic – despite a previous ruling by the administrative court to the contrary.

Jarasch does not rule out expropriations
But that's not all: Since the beginning of the year, cyclists in Berlin's city center have been able to use the already scarce parking spaces free of charge. In this way, the senator wants to encourage cyclists and scooter riders "to use these traffic areas".

In order to tackle the housing shortage in Berlin, Jarasch meanwhile did not rule out expropriations. "It is the last resort and it can by no means be the only means," said the Green politician. Since the required number of apartments cannot be achieved through new construction alone, landlords should in future make a proportion of their properties available to people with medium and low incomes.

The 54-year-old is the Green Party's top candidate for the House of Representatives elections in Berlin on February 12.
