Germany: tenants have to vacate their apartments for refugees

Lörrach tenants have to vacate their apartments for refugees - in view of the fragile social peace in Germany, such a report can only be taken for false news at first glance. And yet: the thing is true. The Badische Zeitung as well as Der Westen and Junge Freiheit have asked the responsible housing association. Even a letter that is supposed to prove the matter and is circulating as a copy on the Internet is genuine.

Hard to believe, but true: in a letter dated February 15 to the residents of Wölblinstraße 21 to 29, the Lörrach municipal housing authority informed them that their tenancy would be terminated soon. Citation:

“As you know, Germany has seen a significant influx of refugees from Ukraine and other regions of the world. The city of Lörrach and the district are also obliged to accommodate refugees. In addition to the planned refugee homes, an intensive search was made for other locations. Due to its special suitability, we will make our property at WölblinstraĂźe 21 to 29 in Lörrach available for this purpose. For you, this means that we will shortly be terminating the tenancy agreed with you.”

Therefore, there will already be a residents' meeting on February 27th, which is "urgently" requested to be attended. The first apartments would be free and refugees would move in "soon". The plan is for the entire facility to be used as a refugee home by the end of the year. According to Der Westen, the accommodation should be made available to Ukrainians. But you want to help with the move and have personal discussions to find individual solutions.

In Lörrach, the Greens are the strongest force, with the majority of the municipal council left of center. Mayor is Jörg Lutz, who is close to the SPD. Baden idyll - as long as you are not affected by the decisions yourself. The local government does not notice how far away one is from the reality of normal families in Germany, who are eaten up by rent terminations, inflation, price increases and the energy crisis.

It is hardly surprising that in this sensitive situation, the reactions on social media are soaring. The letter from the housing association had spread there in a matter of seconds.

The typical media classification follows immediately. Not the brazen action of the municipal housing association, but the reactions to it are the scandal. T-online made the "right-wing shitstorm" the main topic and asked whether it was "justified". Ultimately, the housing association would help after the eviction and the systems would be "at the end of their life cycle" anyway. Not that bad when you get a letter that takes you out of your own four walls through no fault of your own.

Similarly, the Badische Zeitung classified the displeasure as a "shitstorm from the right-wing spectrum". The only thing left to add is that you obviously have to come from the "right spectrum" to understand the concerns and needs of renters. The left-wing spectrum has long since said goodbye to this solidarity, when the media no longer act as advocates for those who have been cheated, but as defenders of politically questionable methods.
