Germany: CDU warns against Islamic party

Even the federal government expects that under the new citizenship law there will be at least two and a half million additional people who will be entitled to a German passport. The CDU is sounding the alarm: this would open the way for an Islamic party.

Berlin - When the new citizenship law comes, there will be an Islamic party controlled from Turkey. The domestic policy spokesman for the CDU parliamentary group, Alexander Throm, expects this. “This will not only massively change our demographics, but also the voter structure,” the Union politician told the Bild newspaper.

The government's plans provide for the naturalization of foreigners to be made much easier. The federal government assumes that at least two and a half million additional people will then be entitled to German citizenship, including many Turks and Syrians.

Islamic Party: Voter potential is there
For Throm, there is enough voter potential for an Islamic party: “If the traffic light coalition is hoping for new voters, it will be surprised: We have to be prepared for the fact that a German branch of Erdogan's AKP will soon sit in the German Bundestag.” In fact, the AKP's attempts have failed so far, because too few interested parties were eligible to vote.

That could now change with the reform. “With two and a half million votes you can overcome the five percent hurdle in a federal election,” calculates Insa survey researcher Hermann Binkert for Bild. “There is demographic potential for a Muslim party in Germany.”
