Election of AfD mayor in Saxony is reversed

The mayoral election in Groß Schirma, which was won by Rolf Weigand from the AfD, has been declared invalid.

After a thorough examination of the election documents by the local authority supervisory authority, the Central Saxony District Office decided to object to and annul the mayoral election in Groß Schirma. Several violations of important election regulations were found, including the lack of a handwritten signature on Weigand's election proposal. Therefore he should not have been allowed to vote at all. As a result, a new election was ordered.

Weigand won the election on March 3rd in the first round against two competitors and received 59.4 percent of the vote. The election became necessary after longtime incumbent Volkmar Schreiter committed suicide last year.
