Report: German minister for foreign affairs spent 11,000 euros on styling in December

Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) apparently spends a five-figure amount per month on hairdressers and make-up artists. As Bild (Saturday edition) reports, citing the federal government's response to a CDU request, Baerbock's styling cost taxpayers a total of 11,900 euros in November 2023.

Berlin - In December it was 11,305 euros. Baerbock's expenses therefore significantly exceed those of other cabinet members: in December 2023, Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) billed a total of 3,141.60 euros for hairdressers and stylists. Federal Family Minister Lisa Paus (Greens) received 2,677.50 euros, and Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) received 541.45 euros. Federal Labor Minister Hubertus Heil (SPD) and Federal Construction Minister Klara Geywitz (SPD) each billed 300 euros in December. The CDU member of the Bundestag Christoph Ploß criticizes the expenditure and is in favor of an upper limit on hairdressing costs.

Ploß said to Bild: "If hard-working taxpayers have to spend five-figure sums every month on Annalena Baerbock's hairstyle, the fun stops. We need an upper limit for hairdressing and Cosmetic expenditure by the federal ministries." Of course, it is fundamentally legitimate for the state to cover the costs for representation purposes of prominent officials. “But the fact that Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock alone spends over 11,000 euros every month on hairdressers or make-up artists is an abuse and clearly too much.”
