Milei in Hamburg: “The state is not a solution, but the problem”
Hamburg - The Argentine President Javier Milei was awarded the Hayek Medal in Hamburg. The self-proclaimed anarcho-capitalist received the award for his liberal, free-market government policy from the Friedrich August von Hayek Society. The audience cheered him "Libertad, Libertad, Libertad".
After the award ceremony, the Argentine president spoke to around 250 guests about his studies and his path into politics. "When I studied economics, I became a libertarian," the economist recalled. During his second master's degree, neoclassical thinking took root "and at the same time I began to deeply despise the state." He realized "that the state was not a solution, but the problem. But I didn't know what to do. There was no real solution."
Leftists demonstrate against honor
Outside the event, a peak of 360 left-wingers demonstrated against the honoring of the Argentine president under the slogan "No prize for the extreme right - no medal for Milei," as the police told Junge Freiheit. The organizers had expected 500 participants. The Left Party, among others, had called for this.
A rally was held afterwards. According to the Hamburg police, the demonstration and rally took place without incident. In contrast, the Tagesschau reported that two demonstrators managed to break through a police cordon around the venue and unfurl a banner. The troublemakers were then taken away.

Milei leads Argentina out of the crisis
After six months in office, President Milei is – contrary to what is suggested in much of the media – quite successful with his libertarian political style. His reform program, which includes comprehensive austerity measures for the indebted country, recently made it through the Senate. The inflation rate has fallen to four percent – at the beginning of the year this figure was still at 25 percent. According to current surveys, 55 percent of Argentinians support his policies, reports Handelsblatt.
The new government policy is also being viewed positively on the financial markets. The index of Argentine companies listed on Wall Street has risen by 38 percent since the beginning of the year. The so-called country risk, i.e. the interest rate premium that investors demand for Argentine bonds compared to US bonds, has fallen by around 500 percentage points since the beginning of the year.
On Sunday, Milei will travel on to Berlin to meet with Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD). Unlike other heads of state and government, the Argentinian will not receive a reception with military honors. A joint press conference between the two politicians has also been cancelled. On Monday, the Argentinian president will end his European trip with a visit to the Czech Republic.
