AfD ahead in Saxony and Thuringia

One week before the state elections in Saxony and Thuringia, the AfD is in the lead in a new poll in both states.

Dresden/Erfurt - According to the results obtained by the opinion research institute Insa for the Bild am Sonntag, government majorities without the participation of the BSW or the AfD would not be possible. In Saxony, according to the Insa survey, the AfD achieved 32 percent, ahead of the CDU with 30 percent. The Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) coalition received 15 percent, the SPD 6 percent, and the Greens 5 percent. The Left Party would no longer be represented in the Dresden state parliament with 4 percent.

The Free Voters received 3 percent, the others (including the FDP) 5 percent. A majority in the state parliament without the AfD would therefore only be possible with the participation of the BSW. In Thuringia, the AfD is clearly in the lead with 30 percent, according to the survey. Just behind the CDU with 21 percent is the BSW with 20 percent.

Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow's Left Party achieved 14 percent, the SPD 6 percent. The Greens and FDP would no longer be represented in the Thuringian state parliament with 3 percent each. The others achieved 3 percent. If voters could elect their prime ministers directly, the incumbents in both states would be clearly in the lead.

In Saxony, 45 percent of respondents voted for Michael Kretschmer (CDU), only 18 percent for the AfD's top candidate, Jörg Urban. In Thuringia, Bodo Ramelow (Left Party) received 33 percent, AfD top candidate Björn Höcke received 18 percent, CDU challenger Mario Voigt received 12 percent and BSW front woman Katja Wolf received 10 percent. While 52 percent of voters in Saxony are satisfied with Kretschmer's work (dissatisfied: 35 percent) and 46 percent of voters in Thuringia are satisfied with Ramelow's work (dissatisfied: 40 percent), the opposite is true for Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD). 76 percent of voters in Saxony and Thuringia rate his work negatively, and only 14 percent positively. 56 percent of Saxons named migration as the most important issue in their voting decision, followed by security (50 percent) and education (44 percent).

The situation is similar in Thuringia. According to the Insa survey, education is at the top of the list with 52 percent, ahead of migration (51 percent) and security (50 percent). For "Bild am Sonntag", the opinion research institute Insa surveyed 1,000 people each in Saxony and Thuringia between August 19 and August 23, 2024.
