AfD wants to nominate Weidel as candidate for chancellor

Alice Weidel is set to be the party's first candidate for chancellor in the upcoming federal election campaign. But not all party members may be enthusiastic about this.

Berlin - The AfD has decided to nominate co-chair Alice Weidel as candidate for chancellor in the upcoming federal election. Weidel and co-chair Tino Chrupalla agreed on this in a personal meeting on Wednesday, as the party confirmed.

Chrupalla is to propose Weidel as a candidate to the federal executive board at the beginning of December. On December 7, the party wants to involve "the state spokespersons and the party convention at the beginning of 2025 in the decision-making process," the AfD announced. In March, the proposal is to be presented to the federal party conference "for a unanimous vote."

Weidel would be the party’s first candidate for chancellor
In the last two federal elections, Weidel ran as the top candidate and part of a team of two: together with the then AfD federal spokesman Alexander Gauland in 2017 and together with Chrupalla in 2021. Weidel would be the first person to be nominated by the party as a candidate for chancellor.

The nomination could lead to conflicts within the party, reported Bild. Bundestag member Dirk Spaniel (AfD) is said to be trying to gather forces against Weidel. "Weidel and Spaniel have a deep dislike for each other," apparently said a party member from Weidel's regional association in Baden-Württemberg.
