Connection to foiled terrorist attacks in Vienna: 15-year-old Syrian released in Brandenburg

A Syrian who is said to be connected to the attack plans on Taylor Swift concerts in Vienna was released in Brandenburg - even though the 15-year-old himself had threatened to attack events.

After three concerts by the popular singer Taylor Swift had to be cancelled in Vienna at the beginning of August due to concrete attack plans by a 19-year-old, a 15-year-old was also arrested in Frankfurt (Oder). The Syrian is now free again, reports the RBB. He was arrested at the beginning of September because he is said to have had contact with the Viennese terror suspect.

The Syrian is said to have used a messenger service to encourage the 19-year-old. Accordingly, he was taken into custody by the police during a house search to prevent danger on suspicion of recruiting for a foreign terrorist organization. The two people involved had previously met in a radical Islamist forum, as the Tagesschau reported.

The Syrian is said to have come to the attention of the authorities when he was just 14 years old. After his arrest at the beginning of September, the suspect was initially taken into custody for the maximum permissible period of 14 days. The detention was extended by a further two weeks and ended on Monday morning.

Because there are no separate proceedings against the Syrian in Brandenburg and the investigations by the Federal Prosecutor General did not result in an arrest warrant, he had to be released - but according to the RBB, he is still being monitored by the authorities. The 15-year-old is said to have threatened to carry out attacks on events attended by homosexual people, for example. As part of this threat, police presence was increased during Christopher Street Day - which took place after the youth's arrest in mid-September - in Frankfurt (Oder).

On Monday, the 15-year-old returned to his family in Frankfurt (Oder). While school visits are initially suspended, the Syrian is to undergo a deradicalization program. Further legal steps could result from the ongoing investigations by the Federal Prosecutor General, reports the RBB.
