German Green politician von Notz threatens X with sanctions

The Green politician von Notz is no friend of X and Elon Musk. He accuses him of deliberately spreading disinformation. Now the Green politician is threatening the entrepreneur with changes to the law.

Berlin - The deputy leader of the Green Party in the Bundestag, Konstantin von Notz, has spoken out in favor of massively sanctioning the X platform for allegedly spreading disinformation. "We can see from the current billion-euro fine imposed by the EU on Google that there are very promising ways to enforce the law," he told Die Zeit . In the event of "massive violations" of the law, he would support such action against X, stressed von Notz.

On X, it often goes "for years without consequences" if a user "grossly insults or threatens" others. This type of political communication has contributed to a massive social divide in all Western democracies, explained von Notz. The Green politician also thinks it is conceivable that X deliberately pushes right-wing and right-wing radical posts "to the top" while reducing the reach of other opinions.

Von Notz proposes change in law
In October 2022, entrepreneur Elon Musk bought the Twitter platform and renamed it X. The declared freedom of expression enthusiast and Trump supporter then unblocked countless user accounts - mostly from conservatives, libertarians and right-wingers - who had previously often lost their accounts for "hate speech". Numerous left-wing politicians - including from Germany - reacted with outrage at the time.

Regarding the question of how alleged disinformation on X could be better combated, Von Notz said: "If this platform is also deliberately used by the owner for political campaigns, why should the regulations for illegal and non-transparent party financing not apply?".
