Germany: This is what the latest polls look like before the state elections in Saxony

The race for the state chancelleries in Erfurt and Dresden is entering its final phase. How well will the CDU and AfD perform? And which party could ultimately be the deciding factor? A new survey provides answers.

Dresden/Erufurt - Shortly before the state elections in the east, the CDU can slightly increase its lead over the AfD in Saxony, according to a new survey. The party of the Saxon incumbent Michael Kretschmer would receive 33 percent and would be three percentage points ahead of the AfD, according to a new survey by the research group Wahlen for ZDF. Kretschmer's coalition partners, the SPD and the Greens, can each expect six percent, which would mean that the current government coalition could continue with a narrow majority.

The Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) alliance came third with twelve percent and rose in voter popularity by one percentage point. The Left Party would be eliminated from the state parliament with four percent. To be re-elected, it would need two direct mandates. In the last election five years ago, only Juliane Nagel managed this , in whose Leipzig constituency the autonomous trendy district of Connewitz is located. The FDP, the Free Voters and the Free Saxons, which are under three percent, were not listed.

Without the CDU and BSW, no government in Thuringia is possible
In Thuringia, the AfD around Björn Höcke is still ahead despite slight losses. In the survey by the research group Wahlen, it received 29 percent, one percent less than in the previous survey. The CDU with top candidate Mario Voigt came in second with 23 percent. The Left Party of the incumbent Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow received 13 percent and lost one percentage point. The BSW, on the other hand, made slight gains with 18 percent (plus one percentage point). The SPD would once again enter the state parliament with six percent, in contrast to the Greens with four percent and the FDP, which was also listed here under "Others".

Since all parties have ruled out a coalition with the AfD, only an alliance involving the CDU and the BSW is considered possible. Together with the SPD, such a constellation would have a narrow majority. A few days before the state election, both Voigt and BSW top candidate Katja Wolf had considered working together. The CDU, on the other hand, has ruled out a coalition with the Left Party.
