Germany: This page shows where knife violence occurs on a daily basis
How commonplace are daily knife attacks? A new data project is now addressing this question – and is providing shocking figures.
A pandemic is spreading in Germany: a pandemic of knife violence. Not a day goes by without reports of bloody feuds, fatal attacks and stabbings - and it doesn't just feel like they are becoming more and more common. But can their extent really be measured? A website called "Knife Incidence" is now trying to do so.
According to the site's own information, it searches through police press releases. It records all reports that contain keywords such as "knife," "stab wound," or "machete." The recorded incidents are then visualized on a map. It quickly becomes clear that on Friday alone, there were at least 13 recorded crimes by 4 p.m. By switching to the table view, site visitors can quickly check the data.
“Knife incidence” aims to raise awareness among the population
The incidents on Friday included a "confrontation" in Greiz between a 20-year-old German and a Russian-Somali gang of five. Or a suspected Islamist machete attack on the police station in Linz, Baden-Württemberg. And almost a dozen other threats, attacks and arguments. At the same time, the creators of the "data activism project" emphasize that numerous unreported cases and duplicate publications on several portals could distort the true extent.
The portal claims to want to provide "a transparent picture of the extent and distribution of these crimes throughout Germany." So far, so good. However, it is likely to fail in another self-declared purpose. It also aims to raise awareness and initiate "in-depth discussions" about security in Germany.
