EU politicians want to break up Musk's platform X

EU politicians are alarmed: X is becoming a hate monger, Europe's democracy is in danger. Time for a blockage or even a break-up? The debate is coming to a head.

Brussels - Several EU politicians have announced that they want to monitor and sanction Elon Musk's platform X more strictly. The politicians in Brussels see "hate speech, lies and a manipulative algorithm" there. All of this is a threat to freedom of expression and social cohesion in Europe. "X has developed from a platform for information into a breeding ground for hate speech and abuse," explains EU MP Birgit Sippel (SPD) to the RedaktionsNetzwerk Deutschland (RND).

After taking over the platform, then still Twitter, Musk lifted the bans on 62,000 user accounts, including actors from the right-wing spectrum. Many left-wing EU MPs did not like this. They criticized the fact that Musk had also adapted X's algorithm to his own wishes. According to EU digital politician Alexandra Geese (Greens), the algorithm systematically prioritizes posts by Musk himself, some of which were used to support the designated US President Donald Trump. "Facts and positive content are suppressed, while hate and lies are favored," said Geese. She is calling for an investigation by the EU Commission.

Brussels wants to act decisively
The liberals in the EU Parliament are also increasing the pressure. They doubt that the algorithm is compatible with EU regulations and are demanding that the Commission take action against the platform. Proceedings were already opened against X in December for alleged violations of the DSA. SPD politician Sippel stresses that the EU must act decisively. If X continues to violate laws, breaking up the platform must be considered as a last resort. This is necessary if X endangers democracy, social cohesion and respect.

Such a step is considered unlikely, however, but a ban in the EU remains possible. In Brazil, X was already temporarily blocked after Musk failed to comply with legal requirements. More than 100 celebrities who support the right to freedom of expression signed an open letter to the Brazilian Congress at the time, calling for an end to the "censorship crisis", including Junge Freiheit editor-in-chief Dieter Stein.
In the EU, X has more than 45 million active users. Even though some left-wing journalists from Austria have left the platform hand in hand.
