Germany: CDU-governed Mannheim cuts off gas to citizens

Mannheim's CDU mayor shuts off the gas supply. The federal Greens celebrate the decision and pour scorn on citizens who buy a new gas heating system.

Mannheim - The Green Party's economic policy spokeswoman, Sandra Detzer, enthusiastically welcomed an announcement by the CDU-governed city of Mannheim at the party conference in Wiesbaden. The city's municipal energy supplier, MVV Energie AG, had recently announced that it would completely shut down Mannheim's gas network from 2035.

The decision is based on a decision by the supervisory board, whose chairman is the mayor Christian Specht (CDU). This means that owners of gas heating systems have to freeze, hope for a district heating connection from the city or install a heat pump with all the necessary insulation measures at great expense.
All consequences against citizens who circumvent the heating ban

In her speech to the party conference, Detzer saw this as a confirmation of the policies of Economics Minister and Green Party candidate for chancellor Robert Habeck. And she did not hold back on her scorn for people who, out of concern about a possible defect in their old system, have bought a new one because of the Building Energy Act (GEG).

Anyone who recently installed a new gas heating system, said the Green Party economic expert, will now feel the consequences "with all the consequences." The example of Mannheim shows, said Detzer: "Despite all the criticism, the GEG was right."

CDU mayor decided to end gas
MVV Energie AG, whose supervisory board under the chairman and mayor Christian Specht (CDU) decided to end the gas supply, announced that it wanted to expand the district heating network so that three quarters of all households could be connected to it. The supplier recommends that the rest look into alternative forms of heating at an early stage, such as a heat pump.

The company, whose majority shareholding is held by the city, justifies the radical measure with climate protection and rising costs. Mannheim wants to become "climate positive" . Because the number of gas users is falling, the costs for the gas network have to be spread across fewer users. At least 25,000 households, one in seven apartments, are affected by the end of the gas supply.
