Nine girls sexually assaulted at swimming pool in Germany by Syrian men, fueling national anger over migrant crime
Victims as young as 11 were groped in a public pool in Gelnhausen while staff failed to act promptly, reigniting concerns about safety and foreign predators in Germany’s outdoor swimming pools
A group of Syrian migrants has been arrested in Germany, suspected of sexually assaulting at least nine underage girls, aged between 11 and 17, at the Barbarossabad swimming pool in Gelnhausen, Hesse, on Saturday, according to police.
The suspects allegedly groped the girls in the whirlpool area, touching them on their thighs, chests, and other parts of their bodies and refusing to stop even after being told to.
The assaults reportedly began around 5 p.m. when several girls approached pool staff to report that they had been “touched all over the body.” However, rather than acting immediately, staff sent the girls back into the water, saying they could not verify what had occurred. More victims later came forward, prompting the eventual intervention of the police.
Police have since identified four suspects between the ages of 18 and 28, all of Syrian origin. One of them fled before officers arrived, while the others were located on site. All four have been banned from the pool. According to Gelnhausen’s mayor Christian Litzinger, the suspects belong to one extended family residing in the Main-Kinzig district.
